Biomolecular NMR Facility at the MIT Francis Bitter Magnet Laboratory

The Hong group maintains a Bruker AVANCE 800 MHz solution NMR spectrometer at the Francis Bitter Magnet Lab. The magnetic field is highly stable and homogeneous, and the spectrometer is equipped with a room-temperature 5-mm TXI 1H/13C/15N probe with Z gradient capabilities. Members of the Hong group will train internal and external users to run standard solution NMR experiments, including variable-temperature experiments from 0 to +40◦C as well as biomolecular structural characterization experiments.
The instrument is manual-use only. Access to the magnet for sample swapping is limited to normal business hours, although experiments can be set up remotely 24/7.
The rates since June 1, 2026 are as follows:
| Short-term usage (< 8 hrs) |
Extended usage (> 8 hrs) |
|
|---|---|---|
| MIT | $35/hr | $25/hr |
| Other academic institutions | $35/hr | $25/hr |
| Commercial | $200/hr | $150/hr |
Potential users are welcome to direct inquiries regarding training and usage to Prof. Mei Hong at meihong@mit.edu.
